The Art of Giving
Our fall session is all about GIVING! Each session at ArtXscapes focuses not only on learning new skills in art, but we work hard to weave in other valuable life lessons too! As we approach the holidays, we see a great opportunity for us to explore the importance of giving and the real “joy of giving”. It seems like giving is an easy and intuitive concept, but for children it is learned just like sharing. Encouraging the joy of giving to a child is in sense giving them a gift that will last a lifetime.
How is encouraging the joy of giving a gift?
The joy of giving has been studied and shows that it leads to a happier, healthier life. In fact, generosity sets off a series of reactions in your brain that improves mood, reduces stress, boosts overall physical health, builds self-esteem, and even helps you livelonger! The act of giving makes us feel good!
The Fall session will have 3 classes – each session we will be creating and making something to give to someone else!
Saturday, November 13th: 9:00 am – 11:30 am
Kickoff gift giving! This session will focus on “who” the girls want to give to, a family member, a friend, a teacher? Additionally, we will be working on creating gifts to give to a larger organization (like Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Salvation Army, etc.…)
• We will have up to 5 different gift ideas that can be made in class; the girls can select up to 3 gifts for what they would like to make for their giveaway gifts!
• Gifts we have brainstormed (but we are excited to hear ideas from the girls) include:
○ Painting or watercolor – something they can frame and give away
○ Make jewelry
○ Handmake and decorate a wooden box (possibly for dad, brother
or grandpa?)
○ Handmake coaster – build small wood frame and paint ceramic inserts

Saturday, December 11th : 9:00 am – 11:30 am

Ages Recommended: 5th grade and up

God has given us the greatest sacrifice — his only Son. In doing so, he left us with a true example of what it means to give. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35

Spring 2021
Spring is full of miracles.
Emerging from the cold, snowy winter, we were inspired by the new growth and life that surrounded us in nature. In our Spring 2021 session, we embraced the season and worked with its most bountiful blooms. Our project spanned 5 weeks and the highlight was a session in which we invited Moms, Grandmas, and friends to join us for a class of flower arranging – What a special day to build joy together!
Winter 2021
Our winter 2021 session of ArtXscapes was about exploring COLOR! The Psychology of Color is fascinating and while our Art Teacher, Erin Burchwell, has studied colors and taught in-depth courses we just scratched the surface of the amazing impact colors have on our moods, emotions, health, buying habits and MORE!
Our big project spanned 5 weeks and was called “Our Storyline”; the idea for this project came from a company called FROME. Why the name Frome? Simple – it is a combination of 2 words that perfectly describe this idea – From Frame. They condense movies into chronological color strips that represent each frame – meaning the colors you see can roughly represent the main color of each scene. You can see how beautiful movies are in terms of colors! We took the same idea, but the girls are creating the story of their life.
First, they worked on a questionnaire, then completed a document to draft out their storyline – once that was completed, they started painting. While our group is YOUNG and don’t have L-O-N-G storylines yet, the hope is they can express their life through colors. Erin showed them in her example that if you have some grey or black colors in your timeline (which could indicate sadness) it actually makes the brighter colors/times pop even more! Additionally, not all black or grey = sadness; everyone has a different color for happiness!
